Problems Sleeping?
Insomnia is quite common in our society. While there many different reasons for sleep problems – such as poor diet, too much sugar and refined carbohydrates, too much caffeine, or lack of exercise – I want to share two major causes and the solutions to these.
Ironically, one of the major causes is medication. Medications for sleep, as well as for anxiety and depression, often have severe and sometimes subtle side effects. One of my clients, Ella, was prescribed Xanax for sleep. Most of the time she slept well, but occasionally she would have problems falling asleep and sometimes she would wake up way too early and not be able to get back to sleep. The doctor told her that she could take a very small dose of Xanax that would not cause her any harm.
After a few years of using the small dose of Xanax a couple of times a week, Ella found that she was having more and more trouble sleeping. In addition, she suddenly developed a new symptom: she would wake up early with internal shaking that she found very disturbing. Medical tests came up with nothing.
She was becoming more and more exhausted and finding herself using the Xanax more and more to sleep and to get back to sleep. Finally, after doing some research on the Internet on “Internal trembling” she was shocked to discover that her lack of sleep and her inner shaking were side effects of Xanax!
Ella decided to go off the medication. To her great surprise, she went through an intense detox, with fairly extreme pain in her muscles, weakness, sleeplessness, and intense internal trembling. Finally, after about three weeks, she reported to me that, not only had all pain, weakness, and trembling and stopped, but she was finally sleeping well most of the time! The medication, prescribed to help her sleep problem, was actually causing it.
However, the original reason she sought the medication was because when she was stressed, she would ruminate and worry, which is what was keeping her awake. She needed to learn to deal with this without using medication.
Ella learned two tools that greatly helped her move beyond her obsessive thinking and worry.
One was EFT – the Emotional Freedom Technique. Through this simple technique of tapping on certain acupuncture points, she was able to release some of the anxiety that sometimes kept her awake. Anyone can learn this technique by going to the website www.emofree.com.
The second thing that Ella did was learn to change her thinking from worry about what she doesn’t have and about all the bad things that can go wrong, to gratitude for what she does have and visioning what she wants.
Ella discovered that opening to gratitude, more than anything else, made her feel relaxed and wonderful.
“When I get in bed at night, the first thing I do is thank God for my warm comfortable bed. Then I think about all the good things that happened today and thank God for them. Then I think about all the things the excite me that I want to move toward in my life, and I feel my deep gratitude for them. By this time, I’m very peaceful and relaxed and already mostly asleep.
“When I wake up now I have trained my mind to again remember gratitude – for a good night sleep, for my health, for the beautiful day, for my life, for my family and friends, for my house, my job, my ability to play the piano, and for anything else that pops into my mind. This just takes a few minutes, but by the time I get out of bed, I’m smiling and really looking forward to the day. I rarely have any sleep problems anymore!”

My EFT Client is Stuck – What Now?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and it’s the new acupuncutre without needles procedure used to treat emotional and physcial ailments.
The basic procedures are free and easy to learn. Many Practitioners are self-taught.
But sometimes it can seem like even your best EFT efforts just plain aren’t working.
Many times we put this down to wayward emotional aspects we haven’t addressed yet, but building these into your tapping routine will likely accelerate results further:
Correlate Your Tapping To The Organs Associated
For physical issues, try restricting your tapping to only those meridians whose end-points correlate to the rough physical area in question, i.e.
Karate Chop – Small Intestine
Eyebrow > Bladder
Side of eye > Gallbladder
Under the eye > Stomach
Under the nose > Governing Vessel
Chin > Central Vessel
Collarbone > Kidney
Under the arm > Spleen

Correlate Your Tapping To The Emotions Associated
Try restricting your tapping to only those points that are correlated with the specific types of emotions your client is experiencing, i.e.
eyebrow > trauma, restlessness
side of eye > rage
under the eye > anxiety, trauma
under the nose > embarrassment
chin > guilt, shame
collarbone > anxiety, fear
under the arm > anxiety, fear
You can expand on this too. Notice during your sessions, after tapping what point does the client experience most release? Correlate that to the associated emotion and explore with your client if this is an emotion they’re familiar with, or even knowingly repressing.
Silent Tapping
One of my personal favourites.
Have your client come up with some kind of picture on the screen of their mind, representing the problem, or their resistance to the problem, whatever’s relevant. Usually the more obscure and bizarre the better. Their first, gut answer is always the best.
Then have them silently tap round the points while focussing intensely on this picture. After a few rounds have them notice what elements of the picture have changed. Typically the underlying stuck emotions will have shifted.
I love these silent, no verbals alternatives as it really convinces the client that it ’s the energy work that’s shifting things, and not any clever setups or language.
Metaphor Tapping
Pick the client’s favourite hobby/colour/music/clothes/animal/(insert client’s favourite stuff in life) and have them define the problem in that frame. i.e. “if this problem were a colour/shape/car/etc, what would it be?”
Have them picture it in detail, adjust it according to the problem situation, and tap on the results. Check in again with the original issue and you’ll likely find it’s taken the edge off.
Use this also with pictures attached to any secondary gains around the issue, if that’s where the stumbling block is.
Conversation Tapping
Overpowering anxiety? Can’t get past anger at someone? Have your client begin an internal conversation with the person in question, telling them what they think of the situation, what they need, why they need it, what they didn’t get a chance to say before, etc etc. All the time you are tapping on them (gently). Works a treat.
For Fear Specifically: Use The Gamut
For extreme fear about a situation, the brain balancing approach seems to work incredibly well. Use the gamut procedure.
For less intense fear, try focussing your tapping on the ring finger or gamut spot for similar results.
Change Your Language
Sometimes the client is just not “in it” enough to make any shifts. Some folks love to talk ABOUT an issue, but will back off when you begin getting into it.
First tap around their feelings of un-safety around getting into it.
Then, if using (e.g.) the movie technique, be sure to use present tense language to engage your client more, i.e. What are you seeING in this situation? AS you see this NOW…what are you feelING? Ask your client simply to talk to you as if this event is happening again now.

Tapping Away Disallowing
Disallowing, getting in the way of our own allowing, is often a function stuck beliefs. These beliefs can be that we have to work hard, be busy, deserve what we get, or any number of other things. Many times, without being consciously aware, we become so involved with disallowing that we simply fail to allow.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping is a great way to release the energy around disallowing and to simply let the allowing happen. Allowing is our natural state and it is our blocks that have us disallowing.
What follows is a Tapping sequence which can help release or dissolve the energy around disallowing. In using the following script, and without going into the details of how to do EFT, the tapping points are noted in parentheses. You should tap these points while speaking the phrases shown out loud. Speaking out loud and with emotion do improve the effectiveness of the technique.
Note that results may vary from person to person. If you are unfamiliar with Tapping, you can get a great background online by just looking up Emotional Freedom Techniques.
Here is the script…before beginning, check in with yourself. How strong is the feeling that you are unable to allow? Rate that strength on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is a feeling that couldn’t be any stronger and 1 is barely perceptible.
(Side of the Hand)-Even though I just can’t seem to allow my desire,
-I deeply and completely love and accept myself,
-Even though I just can’t seem to allow my desire,
-I deeply and completely love and forgive myself,
-Even though my desire just won’t manifest,
-No matter how hard I try,
-And I am feeling frustrated,
-And I am feeling worried,
-I really need this manifestation,
-I know that the Universe responds to my thoughts,
-And I have been thinking about this for a long time,
-And I really want it,
-But I just seem stuck,
-And I can’t allow this desire to come around,
-It seems like the more I want it,
-The further away it is,
-So, I feel stuck and I don’t know what to do,
-But, even though I just can’t seem to allow my desire,
-I deeply and completely love, forgive and accept myself,
-And anyone, or anything else that may have,
-In any way contributed to this.

(Under the Arm)-What am I doing wrong,
(Top of the Head)-Because I really want it.

(Eyebrow Point)-I know that if I had my desire,
(Side of the Eye)-It would make me happy,
(Under the Eye)-It would make my life better,
(Under the Nose)-It would make other people’s lives better,
(Under the Mouth)-I would be so grateful,
(CollarBone Point)-I could relax and really enjoy it,
(Under the Arm)-I could have fun,
(Top of the Head)-I could be at peace.

(Eyebrow Point)-But I just can’t allow it,
(Side of the Eye)-Maybe I am just working too hard,
(Under the Eye)-Allowing does mean allowing,
(Under the Nose)-It doesn’t mean forcing,
(Under the Mouth)-And maybe I am pushing a little hard,
(CollarBone Point)-Maybe I am wanting too much,
(Under the Arm)-But I do want this,
(Top of the Head)-But maybe I need to relax a little.

(Eyebrow Point)-Maybe I need to really believe in the Universe,
(Side of the Eye)-Maybe I need to let the Universe deliver,
(Under the Eye)-I could try just breathing deeply and enjoying myself,
(Under the Nose)-I could just accept that my desire is sufficient,
(Under the Mouth)-And that the Universe does hear me,
(CollarBone Point)-And that the Universe does deliver,
(Under the Arm)-The Universe never misplaces an order,
(Top of the Head)-And I placed my order.

(Eyebrow Point)-Since I placed it,
(Side of the Eye)-Maybe I just need to wait for the delivery,
(Under the Eye)-And not spend so much listening to my doubt,
(Under the Nose)-Listening to my left brain chatter at me,
(Under the Mouth)-Maybe I could be peaceful and happy,
(CollarBone Point)-Just knowing that my desire has be fulfilled,
(Under the Arm)-My order is filled,
(Top of the Head)-It is just on the delivery truck now.

(Eyebrow Point)-Maybe I have been so busy trying,
(Side of the Eye)-There has not been any time for the delivery,
(Under the Eye)-So maybe I should try less,
(Under the Nose)-And just listen for the doorbell,
(Under the Mouth)-I can make some space in my life for my desire,
(CollarBone Point)-I can listen to the quiet and wait in peace,
(Under the Arm)-I can try less and be happy,
(Top of the Head)-I can be happy while I wait.

(Eyebrow Point)-That truck will arrive soon,
(Side of the Eye)-And in the meantime,
(Under the Eye)-I can be grateful for such a perfect system,
(Under the Nose)-I can be grateful for my life now,
(Under the Mouth)-I can be grateful for the contrast that I experience,
(CollarBone Point)-That lets me want this,
(Under the Arm)-I am excited about my desire being here,
(Top of the Head)-I am gratefully and joyously allowing my desire now.

Now, check in with yourself again. How strong is your feeling of disallowing now? Did it come down from before? Feel free to repeat this sequence as needed.
